Binman urges residents to check council rules on polystyrene disposal

Polystyrene often causes confusion for households wondering whether it can be recycled. A prominent waste collector known as the No1 Binman, with over 210,000 followers on TikTok, has advised people to verify their local council’s guidance before disposing of this material.

Answering a question about where polystyrene should be placed if it cannot go into recycling bins, he explained that it usually belongs in the general waste bin. However, he emphasised that disposal rules vary depending on the council.

“Polystyrene is meant to go in the general waste bin,” he said. “Some councils might allow you to keep excess polystyrene next to your bin if you have large quantities, for example from furniture packaging. It’s best to check local regulations about storing and disposing of such waste.”

He also mentioned that some household waste recycling centres, or tips, might accept polystyrene and possibly recycle it. Yet, in many cases, it will still be treated as general waste at these facilities.

In Liverpool, the council’s guidance clearly states polystyrene should not be placed in blue recycling bins. Instead, it should go into the purple bin, designated for household waste that cannot be recycled. The council warns recycling bins containing incorrect items, such as polystyrene, will not be emptied, which can lead to collection delays.

The No1 Binman strongly advised against putting any polystyrene into recycling bins. This includes large blocks, food packaging, and takeaway containers.

Waste disposal rules differ across England. According to government advice, councils are not required to collect expanded or high-impact polystyrene as part of dry recycling streams. Residents should always consult their local council’s waste management policies before placing polystyrene in recycling bins.

By following their council’s specific instructions, households can ensure polystyrene is disposed of properly, avoiding contamination of recycling collections and reducing unnecessary waste issues.
