Billy Rowley Reflects on Yeovil Town’s Strategic Summer Overhaul

Yeovil Town manager Billy Rowley has offered an insightful look at the club’s extensive summer overhaul as they prepare for the upcoming season. Determined to lay a stable foundation, Rowley has secured many of his new signings on multi-year contracts, aiming to foster sustained success at Huish Park.

Speaking with the BBC’s Jack Killah, Rowley emphasized the challenges and excitement ahead. “Bringing in ten new players means there is a bedding-in period, and we expect some teething problems in the next six months. But our goal isn’t to dismantle this team in a year’s time. This is envisioned as a two or three-year project,” he explained.

Rowley stressed the importance of building a cohesive squad, stating, “We want to avoid the cycle of replacing a dozen players every summer. This overhaul was essential due to last season’s instability and multiple managerial changes, but it’s not a pattern we want to repeat. We’re assembling a group ready to elevate the club.”

Highlighting the personal side of football, Rowley noted the day-to-day relationships within the club: “You spend nearly all your time with these players – traveling, eating, and living alongside them. It’s vital they fit together well. Most have come through good academies and are quality people, but I always think about how they will gel as a family.”

The manager is confident in the squad’s character and potential. “Most new signings are in their prime and hungry for career progress, while some older players bring valuable Football League experience and leadership roles. I’m very pleased with the team spirit emerging.”

Rowley also discussed key summer additions individually:

  • Goalkeeper Jos Barker, a 6’4” agile shot-stopper from step five football, is a raw talent with rapid developmental potential, especially under regular training with Matt Gould.

  • Defenders Joe Gubbins and Jordan Norville add balance; Joe’s aerial strength and versatility complement Jordan’s exceptional athleticism and one-on-one defending.

  • Hayden Muller offers flexibility, capable of playing both center-back and central midfield, bringing composure and ball-winning ability.

  • Archie Davies, signed from Carlisle, is a skilled right-back with experience in multiple roles, adding technical quality and tactical adaptability.

  • Jack Kingdon, discovered while pursuing other players, stands out with leadership experience as captain at Manchester United under-18s and Cardiff 21s, blending maturity with refined playmaking skills.

  • Midfielder Zain Westbrooke impresses with his football intelligence and quick, one-touch play, poised to be a key on-field leader at 29.

  • Finally, youngster Ste Walker shows immense raw talent. While his career has had its ups and downs, Rowley is optimistic about unleashing his full potential, hoping to witness remarkable contributions in the near future.

With this carefully curated and character-driven squad, Billy Rowley aims to build a resilient Yeovil Town side ready to thrive in the coming seasons.
