Yeovil Town manager Billy Rowley expressed his disappointment and frustration after his side’s 2-1 loss to Gateshead, ending their hopes of a third consecutive win. Despite a resilient first-half display by Yeovil that kept the score level at halftime, a second-half penalty and a swift second goal from Gateshead put the game out of reach. A late header from Kyle Ferguson offered a consolation, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide.
Rowley acknowledged the challenges of playing at such a difficult venue, emphasizing that Gateshead’s current league position doesn’t truly reflect their strength. “We would have accepted a draw before the game, but conceding a silly penalty changed everything,” he stated.
The Yeovil boss admitted he was wrestling with mixed emotions, balancing frustration with the recognition of the team’s recent tough fixtures and notable victories. “There are two sides of me—the part that wants to lose my temper and the part that understands the challenges we’ve faced. We’ll take this on the chin and focus on our next game,” Rowley said.

He also highlighted the physical toll on his squad, pointing out that Gateshead benefitted from an additional day of recovery. “Our small squad size really comes into play here, especially with another red card today, which is incredibly frustrating and leaves us shorthanded,” he explained.
Rowley didn’t shy away from criticizing the match officiating. “I normally avoid talking about referees, but I felt the official struggled to maintain control today,” he commented.
There was a tactical substitution in the first half when Millar Matthews-Lewis was withdrawn. Rowley clarified the decision was based on fitness and the need to change their pressing strategy. “He’s lacking match fitness, so we needed to increase pressure on the ball. It was a tough tactical call,” he noted.
On a positive note, new signing Will Merry made his debut after joining on National League deadline day. Rowley praised his talent despite limited time with the team. “He’s a very exciting player, and although he’s only met the lads recently and hasn’t trained with us yet, his potential is clear. I think he will be a valuable signing for us,” he said.
The manager also expressed his gratitude to the traveling supporters who made the long trip to support the team. “Our fans were excellent tonight—we truly appreciate their backing. It’s always hard when they travel this far, and we can’t even give them a point,” Rowley added.
Looking ahead, Yeovil prepares for another away fixture on Tuesday against Southend United. Rowley outlined the quick turnaround: “We’ll get back late tonight, rest tomorrow, prep Monday, and then head to Southend. We aim to go there with good spirits and try to get at least a point.”
