Billionaire Chris Rokos has received planning permission to undertake significant restoration work on the Old Stables at his Savernake Forest estate near Marlborough. These stables, constructed in the 1820s, are Grade II listed and featured on English Heritage’s register of ‘at risk’ buildings due to severe deterioration.
The once-grand stables suffered considerable structural damage in 2019, shortly after Rokos acquired the property. The approved renovation plans include the removal of an internal basement staircase, alongside comprehensive waterproofing and insulation of the basement, both inside and out.
Standing alongside the Grade I listed Palladian mansion and the Octagonal Pavilion, the stately stable block—with its distinctive clock tower and courtyard—is a key architectural feature of the expansive Georgian estate.

The restoration aims to repurpose the building to provide ancillary guest accommodation, with the basement transforming into a lobby area and restroom facilities. The project received swift approval from planning officers acting under delegated powers, marking a positive step toward preserving the historic fabric of the estate.
