Avon and Somerset Police have been granted new powers to combat dangerous driving and illegal racing through Cheddar Gorge, a scenic yet troubled stretch of road. Under a Temporary Traffic Regulation Order (TTRO), police can now close the B3135 road between Cox’s Mill car park near Cheddar Rising and the B3371 junction beyond the top of the gorge toward Priddy. These closures can occur Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays between 4 p.m. and 6 a.m., targeting peak times for anti-social driving activities.
The TTRO permits closures in advance of anticipated events or in response to ongoing issues, with the flexibility to implement closures at any time and for varying durations within the specified hours. Granted initially for 21 days by Somerset Council, this order can be extended up to 18 months to address persistent concerns.
Importantly, business operations will continue as usual during any closures, and local residents will retain full access to their homes. This measure is designed to minimize inconvenience while maximizing public safety.

Cheddar Gorge has long been a hotspot for gatherings of boy racers and reckless driving, prompting previous dispersal orders by the police. Acting Sergeant Daryl Screech emphasized the disruptive and dangerous nature of these events, noting the strain they place on police resources diverted from other essential duties. He stated, “We are fully aware of the disruption anti-social driving continues to have on the residents of Cheddar and its visitors. This new authority allows us to proactively prevent these incidents with minimal impact on the wider community.”
Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Transport and Waste Services, expressed strong support for the initiative. He acknowledged the complex challenges of addressing the issue but affirmed that empowering the police with these new powers will significantly reduce opportunities for dangerous and anti-social driving in the area.
Together, these measures represent a firm commitment by law enforcement and local authorities to protect both the safety and quality of life for Cheddar’s residents and visitors alike.
