Best-Kept Secret in Bath Wins National Award

A hidden treasure of Bath’s rich history, The Old Theatre Royal, has been honoured with a prestigious national award for the third consecutive year, it was announced today (Monday, August 4). Nestled on Old Orchard Street, this remarkable venue has received the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice award, a testament to its enduring appeal and cultural significance.

Originally opened in 1750 as The St James Theatre, the building quickly became one of Georgian Bath’s most fashionable entertainment spots. For half a century, it served as a vibrant theatre before transitioning through diverse roles, including a Catholic mission centre and a Masonic Lodge.

Vincent Baughan, coordinator of the tour guides and Chairman of the Trust for The Old Theatre Royal, expressed his pride in the recognition. “This award reflects the tireless dedication of our volunteer guides, historian, and curator. It’s an honour to be associated with such an important landmark that holds not only local but national significance in the realms of theatre, the Catholic Church, and Freemasonry.”

The Travellers’ Choice Awards are determined by outstanding reviews and ratings from visitors on Tripadvisor over the past year. Boasting an impressive 4.9 out of 5 stars from 226 reviews, The Old Theatre Royal continues to captivate tourists and history enthusiasts alike.

One recent visitor praised the experience: “What a fantastic tour! So interesting and informative. Highly recommended for anyone fascinated by historic buildings, theatre, or the Freemasons. There’s truly something for everyone.”

The building’s rich history reflects Bath’s evolution. After fifty years as a popular playhouse, the city’s population had expanded tenfold, prompting the opening of the new Theatre Royal in 1805 to accommodate growing audiences. Meanwhile, The Old Theatre Royal found new purpose as a Catholic mission before becoming a Masonic Lodge.

Today, the Old Theatre Royal operates as both a museum of Masonry and a venue for special events, including performances, conferences, and weddings. Visitors can explore its historic halls through regular guided tours available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.

For those interested in joining a tour or hiring the venue, detailed information is available on The Old Theatre Royal’s official website.
