James Rew has reaffirmed his dedication to Somerset County Cricket Club, signing a three-year contract extension that will keep him at the club until 2029. The talented 22-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman, previously contracted through 2026, expressed his enthusiasm for continuing his career with what he calls the “best club in the world.”
“I’m thrilled to extend my stay at Somerset,” said Rew, who was named Somerset’s Young Player of the Year in 2023 and is also an England Lions representative. “I love playing here, and in my opinion, Somerset is the best club anywhere. There’s nowhere else I’d rather be.”
Rew highlighted the special atmosphere created by the club’s members and supporters, praising the unity and passion within the team. “Playing in front of our members and fans alongside such a talented group of players is incredible. We’re all focused on winning trophies in the coming years, particularly maintaining our dominance in white-ball cricket and capturing the elusive County Championship. That title would mean everything to me and many others here.”

Having relocated to Taunton from London at age four, Rew joined Somerset’s pathway at ten and made his first-team debut in a Royal London Cup match against Yorkshire in August 2021. Since then, he has made 94 appearances across all competitions, amassing over 4,800 runs, including a highest score of 221 against Hampshire in the County Championship, and completing 191 dismissals.
His consistent performances at the club level, combined with his leadership in the England Lions and as captain of Somerset’s One-Day Cup side, earned Rew a call-up to the England Test squad for the 2023 summer series against Zimbabwe.
Somerset’s Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry, praised Rew’s contributions both on and off the field. “James is a vital part of our squad in every format. His dedication, composure under pressure, and professionalism set a standard for all players. Despite his youth, he commands respect through his maturity and skill. We look forward to supporting his growth and seeing the continued impact he will have on the team.”
Hurry added, “James’s passion for Somerset is evident. I know our members and fans will be delighted to see him commit his future to the club.”
