Ben Church has described his experience of playing for Somerset in the Metro Bank One Day Cup as “amazing”. The 18-year-old made his debut this season and has appeared in all five matches played so far, with Somerset winning two and losing three.
With several senior players including Tom Banton, James Rew, Thomas Rew, and Tom Kohler-Cadmore involved in The Hundred competition, and Finn Hill sidelined through injury, Somerset turned to their academy talent to fill the gap behind the stumps. Church stepped up to take the wicketkeeping duties, demonstrating promising form by taking seven catches and completing one stumping. He has also contributed 48 runs with the bat, with a top score of 20.
Speaking to Somerset’s official website, Church conveyed his gratitude and enthusiasm for the opportunity. “I’m so fortunate to have had the chance to play professional cricket for Somerset this summer. It’s been really good,” he said.

Reflecting on his surprise selection, he added: “When I found out I was in the squad, it was a bit of a surprise, although I anticipated an opportunity given the absence of other players due to The Hundred. It was exciting to learn I’d been included.”
Church noted the challenges of the step up to First XI cricket: “Playing in front of fans introduces a new pressure, and the pace of the game is quicker. It’s about managing these pressures, but I haven’t found it too overwhelming. The role I’ve been playing-coming in later and helping to finish innings-is something new to me and has been a rewarding challenge.”
He also highlighted his wicketkeeping performance: “I haven’t dropped many catches or missed stumpings, which I’m pleased about. I’ve been focusing on being as tidy as possible. I was delighted to make a stumping and hope to add more in the matches ahead. Overall, I’m definitely enjoying myself – it’s a fantastic experience to play professional cricket for Somerset.”
Looking ahead, Somerset are preparing for an important home match against Surrey at the County Ground on Friday at 2pm. The team must secure a win to keep their hopes of progressing further in the competition alive; winning all three remaining games would guarantee advancement.
Somerset Head Coach Jason Kerr reflected on the upcoming fixtures: “We find ourselves needing to win three more games to have a chance of progressing, similar to our position in the Blast. We’ve played some strong cricket so far, but the last game against Leicestershire was disappointing, especially in the second half. We need to improve and replicate the quality of cricket we’ve shown at home.”
He added: “Surrey have also lost players to The Hundred but still possess several internationals, making them a formidable opponent. We must perform at our best to claim the points. Our squad is talented, blending experienced and inexperienced players. Bowling has been a strength, and batting was solid until the last match. We need to draw on this form, maintain belief, and deliver consistent performances in the coming days.”
