Longleat Safari Park has announced the passing of Malaika, one of the oldest lions in the United Kingdom. Born at the estate, Malaika was just weeks away from celebrating her 20th birthday when she passed away peacefully in her sleep.
Her age-related health struggles were recently highlighted in the latest series of Animal Park, airing daily on BBC 1. Despite these challenges, Malaika enjoyed a long and well-cared-for life far beyond the average lion lifespan of around 14 years.
Darren Beasley, Head of Animal Operations, reflected on Malaika’s legacy: “Malaika was the Queen of Harry’s pride and was deeply loved by both guests and keepers. Finding her peacefully passed in the morning was a gentle end to a remarkable life.”

Lions have held a special place at Longleat since 1966, being the first animals featured in the park’s pioneering drive-through safari, the first outside Africa. Today, the park is home to two prides, led by Harry, Klaus, and Simba, continuing the lion legacy Malaika was part of.
