Kingsmead Street Bottle, a favourite independent bar in Bath, is set to close its doors for good this Sunday, 27th September. Established six years ago, the venue has struggled to sustain its business amid rising operational costs and the government’s decision to maintain current VAT levels, which many in the hospitality industry have criticised.
Founder Simon Bowden shared the news via an Instagram statement on Friday, expressing his gratitude to the bar’s patrons over the years. “After six years, we will be closing our doors this Sunday 27th September,” he wrote. “We’ve tried everything over the last couple of years to increase revenue to cover the ongoing increase of all costs, along with the government not heeding calls from many in our industry to reduce VAT, leaving us with no choice but to close. I want to personally thank all of our amazing customers for your support as you’ve helped make it what it has become.”
The Bath venue followed the success of its sister bar, The Palmer Street Bottle in Frome, which remains open. Kingsmead Street Bottle was well-loved for its relaxed, informal atmosphere, complete with board games and a Nintendo Wii for customers to enjoy. It also gained recognition for its wide range of craft beers and distinctive IPAs. Earlier this year, the bar expanded its offering to include food for the first time.
The bar’s prominence was highlighted earlier this year when it was recognised as the best bar in Bath, praised for its unfussy charm and welcoming environment.
Regulars have expressed sadness at the impending closure. One long-time customer remarked, “Kingsmead was where we found our people and made real friends when we moved to Bath five years ago. Many a stamp has been collected there. It’s truly the end of an era.”
Others recognised the challenges faced by independent businesses in the city, noting the fierce competition from numerous bakeries, coffee houses, and restaurants. One commented, “It’s almost impossible to succeed in Bath as an independent business these days, and even chains find it tough.”
Another devoted fan shared a personal reflection: “I am utterly gutted and will miss this place terribly. It has been my happy place since my accident. The beers on tap were always brilliant, and the staff were legends. My four kids are heartbroken, and not just because of the Nintendo!”
Kingsmead Street Bottle will serve its final drinks this Sunday. Meanwhile, its sister venue, The Palmer Street Bottle, continues to welcome customers Tuesday through Sunday.
