‘Beautiful’ Somerset Market Town Named UK’s Best Place to Visit

Wells, a picturesque market town in Somerset, has been hailed as the UK’s best destination to visit. Although it is officially a city due to its historic cathedral, with a population of just 12,000 residents as of 2026, Wells is often described as England’s smallest city, offering an intimate and serene experience far from bustling crowds.

This medieval gem recently topped a Which? survey of UK inland towns, scoring highest for its beauty and range of tourist attractions. Its quaint streets and historic charm have long made it a favourite getaway spot, but Wells has also gained fame as a filming location. The town was featured as the fictional village of Sandford in the cult British comedy film Hot Fuzz, starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Visitors can explore authentic landmarks such as the Swan Hotel, the iconic corner shop famous for Cornettos, and the marketplace where the film’s memorable gunfight scenes were shot.

Beyond Hot Fuzz, Wells has captured the imagination of Hollywood and television alike, appearing in series like Doctor Who and Wolf Hall, and even in the Dungeons and Dragons movie.

Wells is far more than a charming backdrop; it boasts a wealth of attractions for visitors seeking enriching day trips or relaxing weekend escapes. Central to the city’s appeal is Wells Cathedral, England’s first Gothic cathedral, a breathtaking masterpiece that took three centuries to complete. Inside, visitors can admire over 300 intricate sculptures and Britain’s oldest working mechanical clock, dating back to the 14th century. Daily guided tours bring the cathedral’s rich history to life.

A short stroll from the cathedral leads to Wells Market Place, where bustling markets take place every Wednesday and Saturday. Shoppers can find fresh local produce, handmade crafts, and delicious treats to enjoy.

Photography enthusiasts will appreciate Vicar’s Close, Europe’s oldest residential street. Its cobblestone lane and charming stone houses, framed by views of the cathedral, make it a highlight for any visitor.

History buffs should not miss the Wells and Mendip Museum, founded in 1893 by Victorian geologist Herbert Balch. The museum showcases fascinating artefacts from the Mendip Hills and offers insights into Wells’ past.

For those who enjoy scenic walks, nearby Glastonbury Tor is an ideal spot. Steeped in Celtic mythology and Arthurian legend, the ancient hill provides stunning panoramic views and a peaceful retreat in the countryside.

After a full day of sightseeing, visitors can unwind at the Swan Hotel, known from Hot Fuzz and serving traditional British dishes and afternoon tea. Another local favourite, the City Arms, occupies a former city jail and is renowned for its welcoming atmosphere, fine ales, ciders, and hearty pub fare.

Wells has received glowing reviews from travellers on TripAdvisor, who praise its cathedral’s beauty, vibrant market, independent shops, and excellent dining options. One visitor summed it up perfectly: “The cathedral is amazing and beautiful. The centre of Wells is interesting and well worth exploring. The market offers wonderful artisan foods and crafts.” Another commented, “This is a lovely place to spend the day, especially on market day, with lots of charming shops and great places to eat.”

With its rich history, cultural charm, and peaceful ambiance, Wells stands out as a must-visit destination in the heart of Somerset.
