Bath’s Iconic Nanny College Becomes First University Dedicated to Early Childhood

Norland College, the prestigious Bath-based institution known for training nannies to serve royalty, celebrities, and the global elite, is making history. This September, it will become the world’s first university solely dedicated to early childhood education and care.

For decades, families including the Royal Family—such as the Prince and Princess of Wales, who employed Norland nannies for their children—and celebrities like David and Victoria Beckham have trusted Norland nannies with their children’s safety and development. The iconic brown uniform worn by Norland graduates is internationally recognized, and around 100 nannies graduate each year, stepping into highly sought-after roles.

Following the Office for Students’ approval, Norland has evolved into Norland University of Early Childhood. This marks a significant milestone, expanding its qualifications beyond undergraduate courses to include Master’s degrees. The rigorous training program involves more than 1,200 hours of practical placements, followed by a year working as a newly qualified nanny, blending academic excellence with hands-on experience.

Dr. Janet Rose, Norland’s principal, highlighted the significance of this change: “Achieving university title is a landmark moment for Norland and for the field of early childhood education and care. It strengthens our ability to advance research, influence policy and professional standards, and shape the future of early childhood for generations to come.”

Graduates of Norland enjoy exceptional job security, a rare benefit in today’s job market. The Norland Agency offers near-guaranteed placement, with starting salaries typically exceeding £50,000—and some experienced nannies reportedly earn double that.

Admission to Norland remains competitive. Prospective students must earn at least 96 UCAS tariff points, and tuition fees for domestic students in 2026/27 are set at £17,884—almost double the average university fees in the UK. Even the signature brown uniform costs approximately £1,000.

Founded in London in 1892 by education pioneer Emily Ward, Norland relocated to Bath in 2003 and most recently settled in Oldfield Park in 2017. The college began admitting male nannies in 2015, with its first male graduates in 2018.

Alex Proudfoot, Chief Executive of Independent Higher Education, praised Norland’s dedication to its unique mission: “Norland has long been an inspiration to other independent higher education providers. As the UK’s newest university, it shines brighter than ever as a beacon of specialist education, combining academic rigor with professional excellence to unlock every student’s potential.”
