Bath draws over six million visitors annually, enchanting tourists with its UNESCO-listed Roman Baths and Royal Crescents. For locals, however, living in such a popular destination can sometimes feel like residing in a bustling theme park. Crowds of tourists, constant camera flashes, and throngs of shoppers create a lively but overwhelming atmosphere.
While tourism undeniably benefits Bath, residents often crave a quieter, more relaxed setting to enjoy their city. That’s where Chelsea Road comes in – a hidden gem virtually untouched by the tourist influx.
Nestled in the upmarket Weston suburb, Chelsea Road is lined with charming delicatessens, boutique shops, charity stores, and unique gift outlets. It’s a roughly 20-minute walk from Bath’s city centre – far enough to keep most tourists away, making it a favorite among locals seeking tranquility.

Kate, owner of Paprika, a deli at the top of the road, confirms that tourists rarely venture here. “We don’t get a lot of tourists at all. Our customers come because it’s convenient and parking here is much cheaper than downtown,” she explains.
Many patrons come from nearby Royal United Hospitals, including patients, staff, and visitors, making Chelsea Road a close-knit community hub. Local artist Georgia, who runs the art shop Una, praises the area’s supportive vibe: “I love it here — it feels amazing. Everyone’s really friendly, and the shopkeepers are fantastic.”
Though she jokes, “There are definitely too many coffee shops,” the camaraderie on Chelsea Road is clear. Ann, owner of Gaia, a farm shop and florist, recounts how the community rallied around her during a difficult time. When roadworks blocked her shop window and threatened her foot traffic, Ann reached out on social media for support. “Everyone came in after seeing my post. It was heartwarming to feel that sense of togetherness.”
Estate agent Jon from Nash & Co highlights Chelsea Road’s appeal to homebuyers: “It’s popular because it has two schools, it’s on a flat route into town, it’s close to the hospital, and parking is easy. It really has everything.”
For those looking to explore beyond Bath’s well-trodden tourist paths, Chelsea Road offers an inviting, authentic experience cherished by locals but still waiting to be discovered by visitors.
