Bath’s Emberwood: “Camp, Elegant and a Little Bit Fun” – A Sunday Times Food Critic’s Delight

Emberwood, nestled within the historic Francis Hotel in Bath’s Queen Square, is quickly making a name for itself among food enthusiasts and critics. Though it opened just this spring, the restaurant has already earned a spot in the prestigious Michelin Guide and garnered praise from Sunday Times food critic Charlotte Ivers.

In her recent review, Ivers described Emberwood’s atmosphere as “camp, elegant and a little bit fun,” highlighting the impeccable quality of the dishes. She singled out the chargrilled Padron peppers as “some of the best I’ve ever had,” and the burrata and tomato salad with pumpkin seed pesto as the “standout of the meal,” overcoming her usual indifference to burrata.

The experience, Ivers noted, left her feeling as though she had enjoyed “a rather chintzy treat — like tea at the Ritz or cocktail hour at the house of a glamorous aunt.” Such a description captures Emberwood’s unique blend of sophistication and playful charm.

The restaurant’s commitment to local sourcing is evident, with ingredients coming from across the West Country: poultry from Devon, seafood from Cornwall, and beef from Somerset. Executive chef David Hazell crafts a seasonal menu that showcases the best of these regional specialties.

Earlier reviews echo this enthusiasm. When BristolLive visited in June, reviewer Mark Taylor was equally impressed, particularly by the charming desserts trolley that adds a nostalgic touch to the dining experience. Taylor praised the retro trolley serving treats like baked vanilla cheesecake with citrus crumb and summer fruit compote, calling it “additional theatre” that enhances the meal.

Recognition from Michelin has solidified Emberwood’s status as a top-tier dining destination. Michelin’s guide describes the brasserie as a luxurious space where elegant molding and traditional features meet a modern open kitchen and counter seating. The kitchen’s seasonal philosophy is front and center, with market-fresh catches such as those from St Mawes featured alongside enticing Mediterranean influences.

Standout dishes like red mullet paired with fresh crab risotto exemplify the kitchen’s prowess. Dessert offers options from a menu or from the nostalgic cake trolley, making sure there is a sweet finish for everyone.

In just a few months, Emberwood has captured the hearts and palates of Bath’s dining scene, blending refinement with a touch of whimsy to create a memorable culinary experience.
