Bath and North East Somerset Council has announced changes to bin collection dates over the Christmas and New Year period. Residents should expect disruptions to the usual schedule between December 25 and Saturday, January 10.
Councillor Mark Elliot, Cabinet Member for Resources, highlighted the community’s impressive 60% recycling rate for 2024/25. He noted that waste volumes typically rise by around 30% during the festive season, increasing the workload for collection crews. To help keep collections efficient, residents are encouraged to wash, squash, and sort their waste before placing it in the green recycling boxes. This approach will help crews maintain quick service and minimize traffic congestion on local roads.
The council emphasizes that only plain brown wrapping paper should be placed in blue cardboard recycling bags. Many wrapping papers labeled as recyclable actually contain non-paper components like glitter, making them unsuitable for recycling.

Garden waste collections are currently paused and will resume the week of Monday, January 19. Christmas trees can be collected by the council’s garden waste team once collections start again or alternatively, residents can donate their trees for collection by the local hospice charity Dorothy House for a small fee.
Recycling centres will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day, while the Reuse Shop in Keynsham will remain closed from Saturday, December 20 through Saturday, January 3.
Residents are advised to check the council website to find the exact dates for their bin collections during this busy period. Christmas tree collection can also be arranged online through the council’s service portal.
