Bath’s main Post Office branch, located above the former WH Smith on Stall Street, is set to close its doors on 1 September. This closure follows the impending shutdown of the TG Jones store later that month, which currently operates the Post Office within its premises. Residents and local officials have expressed concerns over the loss of this vital service in the city centre.
The Post Office has acknowledged the importance of its services to the Bath community and is actively seeking a replacement location. It is currently reviewing expressions of interest from various retailers who have shown willingness to host a new branch. However, the process to establish a new branch, which involves securing postmaster accreditation and ensuring suitable premises, typically takes around six months.
Kevin Guy, leader of Bath and North East Somerset Council, emphasised the authority’s commitment to supporting the reopening of a city centre Post Office. “We have made it clear to the Post Office that the council will provide any assistance possible to facilitate the reopening of a branch in Bath’s city centre,” he stated. “We will maintain close communication throughout the process to support this initiative.”

Wera Hobhouse, Bath’s Member of Parliament, highlighted the vital role that Post Office counter services play, describing them as “a lifeline for many”. She pledged to collaborate closely with the council to ensure that residents continue to have access to these essential services.
The shop on Stall Street was renamed TG Jones last year following the sale of WH Smith’s high street business. TG Jones has since announced plans to close stores in 150 locations nationwide, including Bath, due to challenging trading conditions and a recent High Court-approved restructuring plan.
A Post Office spokesperson commented, “We fully recognise the difficult trading environment faced by TG Jones and many other high street retailers. We are exploring alternative sites and have already received interest from some retailers about hosting a new branch. Our goal is to open a replacement branch as promptly as possible. In the meantime, customers can access Post Office services at the Lower Weston and Battle Walk branches.”
