Bath Woman Celebrates 100 Remarkable Years and a Life Full of Courage and Resilience

Sheila Tushingham, a Bath resident and former member of the Women’s Land Army, recently celebrated her 100th birthday surrounded by loved ones at Ivybank House Care Home. Born in 1926 in Newquay, Cornwall, Sheila’s life has been marked by extraordinary experiences and unwavering resilience.

At 13, the outbreak of the Second World War transformed Sheila’s world. By 17, she was serving her country in the Women’s Land Army and the Auxiliary Territorial Service as a physical training instructor, traveling across regions from Surrey to North Wales before settling in Bristol.

Sheila’s early years were shaped by a deep love of horses, fostered by her time spent in her father’s stables near their family home at the Great Western Hotel in Newquay. This passion for horses stayed with her throughout her life; impressively, she last rode at the age of 92.

Following the war, Sheila married three times and devoted herself to raising four children. As a single mother in the challenging 1960s, she often juggled three jobs to support her family. Her career included working as a postwoman in Bristol, followed by a clerical role in Preston with the Royal Mail.

Reflecting on her milestone birthday, Sheila shared, “I’ve certainly had an eventful life with both wonderful and challenging moments. I’m not sure what the secret to longevity is, but staying active and surrounded by family has surely helped.”

Her celebration at Ivybank House was a joyful occasion, complete with warm wishes and a special birthday card from the king. Ivybank’s home manager, Zendrel Moore, praised Sheila for her vibrant spirit and invaluable presence at the home: “Sheila has led a fascinating and inspired life, contributing widely during the war and beyond. We’re honored to celebrate this milestone with her.”

Sheila herself expressed heartfelt gratitude for the day: “It was wonderful to be surrounded by my loved ones and the dedicated team at Ivybank House. Their kindness and good humor made the day truly special.”
