After months of persistent rain and strong winds, parts of Somerset can look forward to a welcome change as spring begins to make its presence felt. On Thursday, Bath is expected to experience temperatures as warm as those forecasted for Corfu, Greece, bringing a much-anticipated taste of sunshine.
Meteorologists from the Met Office report that high pressure is settling over the UK, driving temperatures up to 16°C in Bath on Wednesday and Thursday. This warmth will extend to nearby regions including Bristol and Gloucestershire, offering a brief but pleasant respite from the wet winter conditions.
The South West has endured a wetter-than-average winter, with rainfall nine percent above the normal levels. However, the current high pressure system is forecast to dominate early March, ushering in a dry and bright period for the region. The Met Office forecasts that between March 8 and 14, southern and eastern parts of the UK will enjoy fair and dry weather, while rain remains largely confined to the northwest.

Despite this promising outlook, longer-term predictions suggest that unsettled conditions may return later in March. From mid-March through early April, the Met Office indicates a potential shift to more frequent rain and strong winds, particularly affecting southern England. However, northern and northwestern areas may experience drier and calmer weather during this time.
Across the UK, the arrival of meteorological spring brings a mix of conditions. Northern Ireland, northern England, and Scotland are set to enjoy fine, sunny weather, whereas the south may see a combination of sunshine and occasional drizzly showers. Met Office meteorologist Kathryn Chalk highlights that Tuesday will be generally settled, with the best sunshine in northern regions. Temperatures will peak on Thursday, reaching as high as 18°C in the southeast of England.
This brief period of warmth offers a refreshing glimpse of spring, though residents should remain prepared for possible unsettled conditions returning later in the month.
