Bath takeaway granted late-night licence despite residents' concerns

A new takeaway in Bath’s Oldfield Park has been granted permission to serve customers until 2:30am on Fridays and Saturdays, despite objections from local residents worried about potential disturbances.

Diamond Kebab & Pizza, which opened just 10 weeks ago at the corner of Moorland Road, applied for a licence to operate until 3am. However, the Bath and North East Somerset Council’s licensing subcommittee approved a slightly earlier closing time of 2:30am on weekends and 1am on weekdays.

Oldfield Park is a vibrant area, popular with students who often seek late-night food options. Yet, it is also home to families and long-term residents who expressed concern about the impact of late-night opening hours on neighborhood peace. Several residents highlighted ongoing issues with disruptive behavior from night revellers, though no specific incidents were linked directly to Diamond Kebab & Pizza.

During the June 18 licensing hearing, resident Will Sandry described Moorland Road as “a very residential area” and voiced fears that a later licence could lead to increased disorder, even if not more crime.

In response, the applicants emphasized their commitment to minimizing disruption. They plan to install CCTV, display notices encouraging customers to respect residents by leaving quietly, and keep doors and windows closed after 11pm. Deliveries will be made by car rather than noisy mopeds, and music from car stereos will be turned off after 11pm to reduce noise pollution.

Owner Abdullah Argunaga explained that high rent and business rates necessitated longer opening hours to attract enough trade. Originally requesting a licence until 3am, he agreed to the Council’s compromise of 1am on weekdays and 2:30am on Fridays and Saturdays.

The licensing committee, chaired by Steve Hedges, who disclosed a friendship with one of the objectors, stated they aimed to be “as fair as possible to everybody.” Hedges wished Mr Argunaga success with his business as the licence was granted. Notably, nearby Domino’s also operates until 2:30am.
