Bath Student Shines with Top Honor in Civil Engineering Placement Award

Niamh Butterfield, a structural and architectural engineering student at the University of Bath, has been celebrated for her remarkable achievements during her industrial placement year. She was awarded the Industrial Placement Award at the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) South West Young Achievers Ceremony held in Torquay.

Sponsored by Babcock, the award recognizes exceptional performance during a placement year. Niamh earned this distinction through her impressive contributions while working with Kier Construction, a Bristol-based firm, as part of her degree course.

Throughout her placement, Niamh played a vital role in Kier’s design management team, engaging in multiple projects, demonstrating leadership skills, and earning a Kier Value & Impact Award for her outstanding work refurbishing a charitable independent living scheme.

Paul Santer, CECA South West Regional Director, praised Niamh’s enthusiasm, initiative, and talent, noting that she is embarking on a promising career with vast potential. He also highlighted her as an inspiring role model for young women considering careers in civil engineering, a field crucial for developing sustainable infrastructure in energy, transport, environment, and defence sectors.

The CECA South West Awards, held annually, celebrate excellence within the region’s civil engineering industry. Alongside the prestigious trophy, Niamh received a £750 prize in recognition of her outstanding placement performance.
