Bath Spa University has unveiled ambitious plans to develop state-of-the-art student accommodation alongside a new creative hub near its Locksbrook Campus. This innovative project aims to enrich both the university community and the wider public by combining living spaces with social and academic facilities.
The proposed building will house modern student dormitories, a café accessible to the public, and multipurpose areas including an events space and seminar rooms. In addition to serving students, the university plans to host exhibitions and events that welcome the local community.
Professor Becky Schaaf, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Student Experience, emphasized the significance of this development. “Our Transform BSU vision focuses on building vibrant campus centers with spaces tailored for current and future students,” she said. “By investing in cutting-edge facilities and dedicated specialist staff, we aim to prepare our students with career-ready skills to navigate today’s challenges.”

Following extensive consultation with Bath and North East Somerset Council, the project is moving forward with an estimated construction timeline of 18 months. The site’s proximity to Chelsea Road’s popular shopping area and nearby residential streets such as Locksbrook Road, Station Road, and Ashley Avenue provides excellent connectivity.
Sustainability is central to the design, with innovative insulation and natural ventilation systems set to minimize carbon emissions. The development also targets a 10% net gain in biodiversity and encourages eco-friendly commuting with secure cycle parking installations.
Liz Eyles, Director of Campus Life, highlighted the university’s dedication to student experience: “This transformational programme reflects BSU’s confident and creative investment in student futures. Our goal is to foster a welcoming, inclusive, and flexible environment that supports both students and staff.”
