Bath Second World War Veteran Receives Long-Awaited War Medals After 80 Years

Jack Rugg, a centenarian and Second World War veteran from Bath, has finally been awarded his well-deserved war medals after an 80-year wait. Growing up in Bath, Jack joined the Royal Navy at just 16 to serve his country during the war.

Though the Ministry of Defence confirmed his medals had been issued and sent shortly after the war, they never arrived at Jack’s family home. Decades of letters and requests from Jack to have the medals reissued went unanswered.

Determined to honor his service, Jack’s family tracked down identical replica medals. They presented these to him at Somer Valley House in Midsomer Norton, where Jack currently resides.

Surrounded by his sons, Alan and Nigel, their wives, friends, and cousins, Jack unwrapped the medals and was briefly speechless. He later said, “I had long given up hope of ever receiving them.” He went on to call the occasion “one of the best days of my life.”

Alan and Nigel shared the emotional moment with heavy hearts, feeling immense pride in their father’s service and relieved to finally set the record straight.

During the Second World War, over 3.5 million British men and women served in the Armed Forces, with more than 700,000 making the ultimate sacrifice. Jack’s story is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made and the importance of recognizing veterans.

Rhona Sievewright, general manager at Somer Valley House, expressed how meaningful it was to see Jack reunited with his medals. “Every resident here has a story and a history that deserves to be recognized and honoured.”

Somer Valley House provides 24-hour residential care for up to 66 residents. The home also hosts weekly “Tea on Tuesdays” events at 10:30 a.m., welcoming those interested in learning more. For further details, call 01761 603165 or email [email protected].
