Bath Rugby’s hooker, Tom Dunn, will be sidelined for just two matches following his red card in Bath’s emphatic 69-12 victory over Newcastle Falcons in Round 16 of the Gallagher Premiership. Dunn accepted the charge at the disciplinary hearing after making head contact with Newcastle captain George McGuigan during an upright tackle.
Notably, McGuigan provided a statement indicating the contact was minimal, and medical evaluations confirmed he suffered no significant injury. In a commendable gesture, McGuigan urged the panel to impose a lenient suspension on Dunn.
Provided Dunn completes World Rugby’s ‘tackle school’ course, he will miss Bath’s final two regular-season games—against Bristol Bears and Leicester Tigers—both crucial as Bath aims to secure a home semi-final spot.

Bath’s Head of Rugby, Johann van Graan, offered a strong endorsement of Dunn’s character during the hearing. Describing him as a “family man, a team man, a Bath Rugby legend,” van Graan highlighted Dunn’s dedication and leadership. Last Saturday marked Dunn’s 267th appearance for Bath, making him the most capped player in the club’s professional era.
Van Graan praised Dunn’s consistent work ethic, saying, “He has one of the highest training percentages at the club and plays the game within its values.” As a hooker, Dunn is known for his physicality and involvement in crucial phases such as scrums, mauls, tackles, ball carrying, and ruck clearouts. Van Graan emphasized, “Tom is an integral part of our team as we approach the Premiership semi-finals.”
During Dunn’s brief absence, Bath will rely on Kepu Tuipulotu—recently called up to England’s wider training squad—and Dan Frost as senior options in the hooker position.
