Bath Rugby Transfer Rumours: Alfie Barbeary Set to Join Gallagher Premiership Rivals

Saracens have reportedly secured an agreement to sign Bath Rugby’s standout number eight, Alfie Barbeary, ahead of the 2026/27 Gallagher Premiership season. The 25-year-old has quickly become a fan favorite at the Rec since his arrival in 2022 following Wasps’ collapse, known for his distinctive hairstyle and vibrant personality. His energetic celebrations after the Premiership final only cemented his cult status among Bath supporters.

Bath’s head of rugby, Johann van Graan, has praised Barbeary’s potential, describing him as capable of becoming one of Europe’s top ball carriers. This season, Barbeary’s impressive performances in the Investec Champions Cup earned him a nomination for the EPCR Player of the Year award.

However, Bath faces ongoing challenges managing their salary cap, despite offering Barbeary a contract renewal. According to The Daily Mail, Saracens have countered with a more lucrative, though shorter, deal to lure the player away.

Incoming Saracens director of rugby Brendan Venter is keen to strengthen the forward pack, especially after England international number eight Tom Willis announced his move to French Top 14 club Bordeaux Begles.

In response, Bath are reportedly finalizing a deal to bring in Springbok number eight Dan du Preez from Sale Sharks as a direct replacement for Barbeary. Meanwhile, the club retains South African Jaco Coetzee, who has struggled with injuries, currently sidelined with a second ACL tear, leaving his future uncertain.

Within Bath’s existing squad, Miles Reid has been a reliable presence at number eight over recent seasons. Additionally, 22-year-old academy graduate Arthur Green is emerging as an exciting prospect. At the youth level, Connor Treacey, captain of England’s U20 team in the Six Nations, is another promising talent to watch for the future.
