Bath Rugby is preparing to appoint Mike Prendergast, currently Munster’s attack and backs coach, to replace Martin Gleeson as their new attack coach, according to SomersetLive.
Munster confirmed that Prendergast will leave the province at the end of the 2025/26 season. Earlier reports from RugbyPass linked the former scrum-half with a move to Bath.
Martin Gleeson, the former England backs coach, joined Bath Rugby as attack coach last October on a one-season contract after Lee Blackett departed mid-contract for the same role with England. Although Bath currently sits second in the Gallagher Premiership and has qualified for the Champions Cup last 16 knockout rounds, many critics feel their attacking play has regressed since Blackett’s exit. The team’s narrow attacking framework is considered the tightest in northern hemisphere rugby.

Despite this, Bath has still been effective in attack, securing eight attacking bonus points from ten possible in the league this season and ranking third in total points scored behind Northampton Saints and Saracens. However, there is concern that their physically dominant, close-range style may struggle against tougher opponents in the latter stages of the Champions Cup.
Prendergast joined Munster in 2022 after a decade coaching in France with teams such as Racing 92, Stade Français, Oyonnax, and Grenoble. In addition to his provincial role, he served as head coach for Ireland A in their match against England A last February and acted as an assistant coach with Ireland’s senior men’s team during the summer Tests against Georgia and Portugal.
Munster Rugby General Manager Ian Costello expressed gratitude for Prendergast’s contributions: “While we are disappointed that Mike has decided to depart Munster Rugby, we fully respect his decision and are incredibly grateful for the contribution he has made over the past four seasons. His coaching and character have profoundly impacted our environment, playing a key role in memorable moments including our URC title win. Mike leaves with our utmost respect and best wishes for success in his next chapter.”
Munster Head Coach Clayton McMillan praised Prendergast’s impact and character: “Since arriving in Ireland last summer, I’ve worked closely with Mike and understand why he is so highly regarded. He is a brilliant coach with a sharp rugby mind and an ability to connect with players in a way that brings out their best. His departure is a loss for our coaching group. We wish Mike and his family every success in the future.”
