Bath Rugby is poised to name Mike Prendergast, Munster’s attack and backs coach, as their new attack coach, replacing Martin Gleeson. Sources from SomersetLive have confirmed the move following Munster’s announcement that Prendergast will leave at the conclusion of the 2025/26 season. Earlier reports from RugbyPass also linked the former scrum-half with a switch to Bath.
Martin Gleeson, formerly England’s backs coach, joined Bath’s coaching staff last October on a one-year deal after Lee Blackett departed mid-contract to take up an attacking role with the England national team. Despite Bath’s strong league position—currently second in the Gallagher Premiership—and progress in the Investec Champions Cup knockout stages, concerns persist over the team’s attacking style since Blackett’s exit. Bath’s attack has become notably narrower, operating one of the most compact offensive frameworks in northern hemisphere rugby.
While Bath remains effective, accumulating eight attacking bonus points out of ten and ranking third for points scored behind Northampton Saints and Saracens, questions linger about whether their close-range power game will be enough in high-stakes Champions Cup matches.

Prendergast joined Munster in 2022 after a decade coaching in France with clubs including Racing 92, Stade Français, Oyonnax, and Grenoble. This past year, he broadened his experience internationally, leading Ireland A as head coach in a fixture against England A and serving as an assistant coach for Ireland’s senior men’s team during summer Tests against Georgia and Portugal.
Munster Rugby General Manager Ian Costello expressed mixed emotions over Prendergast’s departure, stating, “While we are disappointed that Mike has decided to depart Munster Rugby, we fully respect his decision and are incredibly grateful for the contribution he has made over the past four seasons. His coaching and character have profoundly impacted our environment, playing a key role in memorable moments such as our URC title win. Mike leaves with the utmost respect and admiration from players and staff alike, and we wish him and his family every success in their next chapter.”
Munster Head Coach Clayton McMillan praised Prendergast’s sharp rugby intellect and rapport with players: “Since arriving in Ireland last summer, I’ve had the opportunity to work closely with Mike and it’s clear why he is highly regarded. His ability to bring the best out of players and contribute to the coaching group will be sorely missed. While we are sorry to see him go, I am confident he will excel in his next challenge. We wish Mike and his family every success.”
