Bath Rugby Set for Boost as Six Nations Stars Return for Club Duty

Bath Rugby head coach Johann van Graan has confirmed that the club’s extensive contingent of Six Nations players have all returned to Farleigh House fit and available for selection ahead of their Round 11 Gallagher Premiership clash against Saracens on Friday night.

This represents a major boost for the title-chasing Blue, Black, and White side, which had more players involved in both the senior Six Nations and the U20s tournament than any other Premiership club.

Scotland’s Finn Russell was a standout performer, while Josh Bayliss came off the bench twice. England’s representatives included Ben Spencer, Ollie Lawrence, Guy Pepper, Sam Underhill, and Henry Arundell, with flanker Pepper featuring the most minutes. Wales’ tighthead prop Archie Griffin also played every Six Nations game, marking a coming-of-age period, including starting against England.

Van Graan stated, “Everybody who came back from the Six Nations or the U20s Six Nations has returned, trained fully today, and is available for selection.”

Prioritizing player welfare, Bath’s head of rugby revealed the club will exceed standard rest protocols for internationals. Every player involved in the tournament will receive a week off during the upcoming three weekends. This stretch includes matches against Saracens at home, an away game versus Sale Sharks, and then a crucial Champions Cup round-of-16 clash against Saracens – the club’s priority fixture.

“Some players will rest this week, others the next, and some the week after,” Van Graan explained, highlighting a strategic rotation to maintain squad freshness.

It’s expected Van Graan will field a less experienced side in the Sale match to reserve his star players for the two critical Saracens fixtures.

Santi Carreras returned from a five-week break in Friday’s 94-14 friendly win over Bedford Blues and is set to share fly-half duties with Finn Russell, easing the workload on Bath’s marquee playmaker.

Russell comes back after arguably his finest individual Six Nations and, with improving weather, Van Graan will aim to keep him in peak form.

Meanwhile, Springbok prop Thomas du Toit remains sidelined, having not featured since Bath’s derby win over Gloucester on January 23. After some time back home in South Africa, he was only a spectator at Friday’s game and will need time to regain match fitness.

Currently sitting second in the Gallagher Premiership table, two points behind Northampton Saints, Bath will look to capitalize on their returning internationals to maintain their title challenge.
