Bath Rugby Injury Update: Johann van Graan Reports on Ben Spencer and Francois van Wyk

Bath Rugby club captain Ben Spencer experienced some discomfort on Friday night but has not sustained a serious injury, according to head coach Johann van Graan. Spencer hurt his shoulder while scoring one of Bath’s nine tries in their dominant 62-15 victory over Saracens.

This emphatic win marked a strong return to form for Bath Rugby in the Gallagher Premiership, completing a season double over Saracens following their 36-29 triumph at the StoneX Stadium in November. The victory sets a positive tone as Bath will host Saracens again in two weeks during the Investec Champions Cup last 16 knockout round, where much more is at stake.

Despite Bath’s squad strength, scrum-half remains a critical position with limited depth. Spencer is a linchpin in van Graan’s strategy, which heightened concern when he was seen grimacing and clutching his shoulder on the ground. However, van Graan was quick to assure fans post-match that Spencer’s injury was minor. “He is okay. In the act of scoring that try, his shoulder took a knock, so he is a bit uncomfortable, but I don’t think it is something to be really worried about,” he explained.

Spencer might even be rested this weekend as Tom Carr-Smith and Bernard van der Linde stand ready to step in.

The news was less positive for the forwards, with Francois van Wyk requiring hospital attention due to a leg cut, reportedly caused by a boot, similar to an injury that sidelined Scotland’s Kyle Stynn. Van Graan noted, “He will be okay, and we will look after him over the next few days. He should recover in due course.”

Looking ahead to Sunday’s match against Sale Sharks, Bath is expected to field a rotated squad after deploying Six Nations stars like Finn Russell, Guy Pepper, Sam Underhill, and Archie Griffin during the Saracens game. Van Graan remarked, “Louis Hennesey, who was called into the Wales squad during the Six Nations but didn’t play, had this week off and will be back next week. We treat everyone differently.”
