Bath Rugby Injury Update Ahead of Northampton Saints Clash: ‘We Are in a Great Place’ – Johann van Graan

This Friday night at the Recreation Ground, two of England’s premier rugby sides, Bath Rugby and Northampton Saints, will face off in a thrilling quarter-final clash of the Investec Champions Cup. The winner of this match will advance to take on one of France’s top teams, either Bordeaux-Bègles or Toulouse, in what promises to be a semi-final filled with intensity and high-caliber rugby.

Northampton Saints enter the quarter-final on the back of a resilient 31-22 comeback victory against Saracens, securing their place in the last eight. Despite several injuries in their squad, the Saints also edged out Castres Olympique 49-41 at Franklin’s Gardens, underscoring their determination.

Bath’s head of rugby, Johann van Graan, acknowledged the quality and history of both teams ahead of the showdown. “This is the Premiership champions facing the team that narrowly lost last season’s European final. Northampton is a side we greatly respect; we’ve battled hard against them over recent years,” van Graan said. “What’s at stake is massive: a semi-final against either last year’s Champions Cup winners Bordeaux or the French champions Toulouse. These are special moments for this club, ones we haven’t experienced recently, so it’s important to embrace them fully.”

Injury news from the Bath camp is cautiously optimistic. Van Graan revealed that England tighthead prop Will Stuart remains the sole significant absentee as he continues his rehab from an Achilles injury. “We’ve managed well so far. After Saturday’s intense match, we have a few bumps and bruises but the squad is in excellent shape,” he reported. “Will Stuart’s rehabilitation is going phenomenally, and others like Jaco Coetzee (recovering from an ACL), and Ciaran Donoghue—who’s back in training but not ready yet—are progressing well. Some younger players such as Jack Woods and Charlie Griffin have undergone surgeries, and Sam Harris is also on track to return. Overall, we’re in a great place as a squad.”

Bath’s campaign this season has largely been smooth, though their 21-41 loss to Northampton Saints at home in December was a notable setback. That match showcased Northampton’s strength, particularly through center Tommy Freeman, who scored a hat-trick. Despite that, van Graan emphasized that the team has moved past that defeat. “We haven’t dwelled on that game. The resilience of this group is remarkable—we always reset and focus forward,” he explained. “Northampton is an elite side, currently leading the Gallagher Premiership and playing exciting rugby. Having reached three consecutive Champions Cup quarter-finals, they have a substantial pedigree in this competition. But everything now is about the knockout game at 8 pm on Friday—it’s going to be a memorable occasion.”
