Bath Rugby Injury Update Ahead of Harlequins Clash: Muir, Barbeary, Obano, van der Linde

Bath Rugby’s final pre-season match against Worcester Warriors raised fresh injury concerns just before the start of the Gallagher Premiership season. The reigning champions head to Twickenham Stoop on Friday night to begin their title defense against Harlequins, but key players could be sidelined following recent setbacks.

Winger Will Muir, back-rower Ted Hill, and new scrum-half signing Bernard van der Linde all sustained injuries during the Worcester friendly. Winger Muir suffered an ankle injury following a tackle on the sidelines. Van der Linde picked up a hamstring strain, which has raised particular concern after an impressive pre-season showing. Hill’s injury details remain uncertain after taking a knock during the game.

Head of Rugby Johann van Graan expressed his worries but remained pragmatic, stating, “That is the game.” Despite the concerns, Bath have depth in the injured players’ positions, offering some reassurance. However, fly-half options remain limited. Finn Russell is out until Round Three due to post-Lions tour rest, and Santi Carreras is currently with Argentina for The Rugby Championship.

An early-season knee injury to Ciaran Donoghue has forced Bath to experiment with player positions, moving centre Max Ojomoh and full-back Tom de Glanville into stand-off roles during recent friendlies. Van Graan was pleased with their adaptability: “Max did well in his first appearance at 10 in a long time. Tom took over in the last 15 minutes. We must be fluid and make the best of the squad we have.”

On a positive note, Beno Obano is nearing a return after months of postoperative rehabilitation. Van Graan confirmed, “Beno will be available for selection next week.”

Regarding Alfie Barbeary, the powerful South African number eight, van Graan explained his absence: “Alfie picked up a minor training injury a few weeks ago. We’re being cautious, and we’ll decide next week if he’s ready. It’s not a long-term concern.”

Bath’s squad faces a challenging start to the season, but their resilience and depth will be key as they kick off their Premiership defense at the Twickenham Stoop.
