Bath Rugby is gearing up for a crucial semi-final clash against Exeter Chiefs at the Rec this Saturday in the 2025/26 Gallagher Premiership. The spotlight is firmly on the fitness of Scotland fly-half Finn Russell, who is expected to return from a calf injury just in time to help his team in this pivotal match.
Russell, 33, missed Bath’s last two games due to a tight calf muscle. Head of Rugby Johann van Graan revealed that if the stakes had been as high as they are this weekend in earlier matches, Russell would have likely taken the field. “It’s a do or die situation now,” said van Graan, emphasizing the urgency ahead of the semi-final.
Regarding Russell’s recovery after the narrow 24-22 victory over Leicester Tigers, van Graan confirmed: “He is doing well and tackling his rehab with a positive attitude. It’s about carefully managing the risk and making smart decisions.” He added that decisions will be finalized closer to the match day, stating, “We’ll wait until Friday at noon to confirm the team.”

While van Graan remained tight-lipped about final fitness updates during Tuesday’s press conference, he reassured fans that Russell is in a strong position to contribute.
However, not all Bath players will feature in the semi-final. Welsh international Louie Hennessey will miss the remainder of the season due to a shoulder injury sustained during Bath’s Investec Champions Cup semi-final. This injury also rules him out of Wales’s upcoming Nations Series tour. The 22-year-old has made rapid strides since debuting for Wales during the Six Nations.
Despite Hennessey’s absence, Bath boasts depth in the centre positions with internationals Max Ojomoh, Ollie Lawrence, Chris Harris, and England A’s Will Butt all available.
In addition, Bath’s pack is reinforced by the return of hooker Tom Dunn and lock Quinn Roux, both of whom have served suspensions and will be fit for selection.
England flanker Guy Pepper remains on the club’s unavailable list, having last played against Bristol Bears. Van Graan is withholding further details on Pepper’s condition as the team approaches the decisive phase of their campaign.
With key players returning and crucial fitness decisions pending, Bath Rugby faces a defining weekend as they aim to secure a place in their third consecutive Gallagher Premiership final.
