Bath Rugby CEO Optimistic as Sir James Dyson Acquires 50% Stake in Club

Bath Rugby CEO Tarquin McDonald has expressed enthusiasm about Sir James Dyson’s recent acquisition of a 50% stake in the Gallagher Premiership club. While he does not expect Dyson’s involvement to drastically alter day-to-day operations, McDonald hopes to leverage the billionaire entrepreneur’s innovative expertise to benefit the club.

Longtime owner Bruce Craig, who purchased the club in 2009, will retain his 50% share and maintain control of the board, which will expand from six to eight members. Dyson and his son Jake are set to join the board, reinforcing the new partnership.

McDonald emphasized the collaborative nature of this partnership: “James Dyson is fully supportive of our current direction. He isn’t here to control or change, but to support Bruce in steering the club forward. With equal ownership, decision-making remains primarily with Bruce’s board appointments, ensuring stability.”

A passionate Bath Rugby supporter for over 45 years, Dyson is a familiar figure at The Recreation Ground, often seen with Craig on match days. The McDonald-led board aims to not only benefit from Dyson’s financial investment but also to tap into the innovative mindset that propelled Dyson Ltd. to global success, valued at around £21 billion.

“We want the Dysons to be engaged beyond board meetings, sharing insights and fresh perspectives. Their track record of innovation is something we’re eager to learn from and apply,” McDonald added.

Due to Premiership salary caps, Dyson’s investment won’t immediately transform the player roster. However, following a remarkable turnaround from bottom finishers in 2021/22 to Gallagher Premiership champions in 2023, the club is focused on sustaining this momentum. Plans for an 18,000-seat stadium at The Rec are underway, reflecting Bath Rugby’s ambitious future.

McDonald reflected, “We’ve caught the wave of success, and the vital question is how to sustain it. With Sir James Dyson’s backing, we’re better positioned to maintain our competitive edge.”

The acquisition marks Dyson as the wealthiest owner in the Gallagher Premiership. PREM Rugby CEO Simon Massie-Taylor praised the development, viewing it as validation of the league’s growing appeal to investors, building on recent investments like Red Bull’s purchase of Newcastle.

Massie-Taylor stated, “This is fantastic news for Bath Rugby and their dedicated supporters. It highlights Bruce Craig’s effective leadership and signals the increasing attractiveness of Premiership Rugby to major investors. We’re excited to witness Bath’s continued growth as they advance their innovative stadium plans.”
