Bath Rugby CEO Optimistic About Sir James Dyson’s Investment Boosting Club’s Future

Bath Rugby CEO Tarquin McDonald expressed optimism about Sir James Dyson’s recent purchase of a 50% stake in the Gallagher Premiership club. While McDonald does not expect Dyson’s investment to dramatically alter the club’s daily operations, he is eager to harness the innovative potential that the Dyson family brings.

Bruce Craig, who has owned Bath Rugby since 2009, will retain his 50% share and continue leading the club, maintaining control over the board, which will expand from six to eight members with the addition of Dyson and his son Jake.

McDonald emphasized, “The key message is that James Dyson fully supports the club’s current direction. He isn’t here to disrupt or take control; he believes in what we are doing and is here to partner with Bruce in the club’s future.”

Despite the equal ownership, day-to-day decisions will remain primarily in the hands of the board, with Bruce Craig appointing 75% of its members, including himself. Dyson, a dedicated Bath fan for over 45 years and a familiar face at matches, brings a legacy of innovation from his globally successful enterprise, credited with a £21 billion family fortune.

“We want the Dysons not only to participate in board meetings but also to engage with the club beyond that. Their innovative mindset is a valuable asset, and we hope to incorporate their insights into our growth,” McDonald added.

Given the salary cap limits in the Gallagher Premiership, Dyson’s involvement won’t immediately affect player acquisitions. However, coming off a remarkable rise from finishing last in the 2021/22 season to becoming champions in 2023, McDonald believes Dyson’s partnership can help Bath sustain their competitive edge as they pursue plans for a new 18,000-seat stadium at the heart of the city.

“We’ve worked hard to catch this wave of success. Now, the challenge is to maintain that momentum and stay competitive. Having England’s richest Premiership owner certainly supports that ambition,” McDonald explained.

The move has been positively received by Premiership Rugby CEO Simon Massie-Taylor, who sees Dyson’s investment as validation of the league’s growth and appeal to major investors, following Red Bull’s acquisition of Newcastle.

“This is excellent news for Bath Rugby and their passionate fans. It highlights Bruce Craig’s leadership and confirms the attractiveness of Premiership Rugby to investors. We look forward to watching Bath expand and accelerate their exciting new stadium plans,” Massie-Taylor stated.
