Bath Cats & Dogs Home is urgently calling for help as it faces an unprecedented influx of abandoned pets this winter. The shelter reports that over 70% of the dogs and 50% of the cats in its care are suffering from anxiety and stress, requiring specialized behavioral intervention.
Each year, the charity assists more than 700 animals, but this winter the shelter has been overwhelmed by frightened and poorly socialized pets. Nicola Charman, Training and Behaviour Manager at Bath Cats & Dogs Home, explains, “Many of these rescued animals are plagued by stress and anxiety. Since they cannot share their past experiences with us, our dedicated team relies on extensive expertise to restore their confidence. We’re committed to helping them heal, but we need support to keep doing this vital work.”
One rescue success story is Nana, a French Bulldog found abandoned under a car earlier this year. Initially too scared to walk or eat, Nana has been lovingly rehabilitated at the centre. Today, she is playful, affectionate, gets along well with other dogs, and is ready to find her forever home.

CEO Rachel Jones highlights the growing complexities faced by the shelter: “This year, we’ve seen a significant rise in cats and dogs arriving with complex behavioral issues that require extended rehabilitation. Without proper socialization during their early months, these animals become easily overwhelmed by new people, environments, and sounds. Your support is crucial in helping them recover and prepare for loving homes.”
Bath Cats & Dogs Home relies on raising several million pounds annually to continue its vital rescue and rehabilitation work. Donations can be made online through the Big Give Christmas Challenge.
For those interested in adopting, a variety of cats and dogs are currently looking for their forever homes on the shelter’s website.
