Bath Rescue Centre Overwhelmed by Record Rise in Abandoned Pets

Bath Cats & Dogs Home is urgently calling for support as it faces a record influx of abandoned pets this winter. The rescue centre reports that over 70% of dogs and 50% of cats currently under its care require specialist behavioural intervention due to anxiety and stress.

Helping more than 700 animals annually, the charity is now struggling as frightened and poorly socialised pets flood the shelter. Nicola Charman, the shelter’s Training and Behaviour Manager, explains, “Many rescue animals suffer from anxiety and stress. Without any knowledge of their past, our team works tirelessly to rebuild their confidence. We are committed to giving them a second chance, but we need help to keep this vital work going.”

One success story is Nana, a French Bulldog found abandoned under a car earlier this year. When rescued, Nana was too frightened to eat or walk, but through dedicated care she has transformed into a playful, affectionate dog who is now confident around others and ready for adoption.

CEO Rachel Jones highlights the increased complexity of cases: “This year, we have seen a rise in animals with deep behavioural challenges requiring extended rehabilitation. Many have lacked proper socialisation during their early lives, making new experiences overwhelming. Your support is essential to help these animals recover and find loving forever homes.”

Bath Cats & Dogs Home must raise several million pounds annually to sustain its work. Donations to initiatives like the Big Give Christmas Challenge provide crucial funding to assist these vulnerable animals.
