Bath Poised to Spark New Era with Challenge Cup Victory, Says Lawrence Dallaglio

Lawrence Dallaglio believes a Challenge Cup win could mark the beginning of a golden era for Bath Rugby, a sentiment rooted in his own experience. As Bath prepares to face French side Lyon in the EPCR Challenge Cup final at Principality Stadium this Friday, the stakes have never been higher.

After ending a 17-year wait for silverware by capturing the Premiership Rugby Cup, Finn Russell and his teammates are eager to secure the second trophy in what could be a historic treble. Bath has also been a dominant force in the Gallagher Premiership this season, finishing top of the table and delivering a commanding win over Leicester Tigers last weekend, making them favourites to finally claim the Premiership crown.

Dallaglio, part of Premier Sports' expert panel covering premier European club rugby, emphasizes the importance of this final for Bath. He recalls the heartbreak of last year’s Premiership final loss to Northampton Saints, a match that slipped away despite Beno Obano’s early red card.

Drawing on memories from his own career, Dallaglio reflects on how Wasps' triumph in the 2002 Challenge Cup — coincidentally against Bath — acted as a springboard for sustained success. “That victory kicked off a golden period for us, leading to our first Premiership final win soon after,” he said.

He believes Bath’s consistent top-tier performance this season has set the stage for another landmark victory. “They have the perfect opportunity to add another trophy and prove their ability to win critical knockout matches. Having come so close and even playing with 14 men last year, this final is their chance to make amends.”

Lyon, boasting talents like Georgian full-back Davit Niniashvili and winners over Owen Farrell’s Racing 92 in the semi-finals, remain formidable opponents. However, following recent league setbacks, and with the final played in Cardiff — conveniently close to Bath’s home ground — Dallaglio sees Bath as clear favourites.

“Facing a French team on neutral ground outside France generally favours Bath, and the proximity to their base adds a home advantage feel,” Dallaglio noted. “Both Bath and Northampton, who face Bordeaux-Bègles in the Champions Cup final the following day, should capitalize on this to secure victory.”

As the rugby world turns its eyes to Principality Stadium, Bath stands on the cusp of potentially igniting a new era of success, inspired by history and driven by recent triumphs.
