Bath Junior School Celebrated for Inspiring Love of Reading and Outstanding Ofsted Report

Widcombe Junior School in Bath has earned flawless praise from Ofsted, reflecting its exceptional commitment to education and student well-being. Catering to 236 children aged 7 to 11, this school has become a beacon of enthusiasm where pupils “brim with delight” each morning as they step into the classroom.

The recent Ofsted report, published on May 6, highlights Widcombe’s successful motto: ‘be the best you can be,’ achieved through a thoughtfully crafted curriculum and diverse extracurricular opportunities. Inspectors commended pupils’ high achievement levels, impeccable behaviour, and the nurturing environment fostered by dedicated staff who know every child personally.

A standout feature of Widcombe is its students' remarkable love of reading—a rare feat in an age dominated by screens. Initiatives like ‘book spas’ and reading championships have transformed pupils into avid readers, often spotted engrossed in books even while waiting in line. Early readers benefit from expert phonics instruction, laying a strong foundation for literacy.

Beyond academics, the school offers enriching experiences, such as a trip to London’s West End that inspired a school production of “Matilda,” and lessons fostering empathy through exploring life in Brazil’s favelas. Pupils thrive both intellectually and personally, demonstrating impressive recall of detailed historical knowledge alongside strong values and confidence.

Ofsted awarded Widcombe top marks across all evaluated areas: quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management. Executive Headteacher Alison Watts and Head of School Aaron Harley expressed immense pride in their community’s hard work and dedication, emphasizing their commitment to nurturing resilient learners who love to learn.

Widcombe Junior School is part of the Palladian Academy Trust, which oversees 13 schools across Bath and nearby areas. CEO Donna Tandy highlighted the report’s recognition of the school’s strong leadership, equitable opportunities, and the positive impact of being part of the Trust.

Widcombe Junior School stands as a shining example of how high expectations, expert staff, and a supportive environment can inspire children to not only excel academically but also develop a genuine passion for reading and learning.
