Saint Martin’s Hospital in Odd Down, Bath, has been rated one star for hygiene following a February inspection, primarily due to a staff member lacking access to crucial digital food safety records. While the hospital’s food handling and cleanliness were deemed generally satisfactory, inspectors identified major shortcomings in the management of food safety procedures.
Food safety management encompasses the systems that ensure food is safe to consume, the staff’s knowledge of food safety protocols, and the food safety officer’s confidence that standards will be consistently upheld.
A spokesperson for HCRG Care Group stated, “We take food hygiene at St Martin’s Hospital very seriously. The inspection confirmed that food handling and environmental cleanliness were generally satisfactory. However, documentation issues arose because the team on duty could not access essential digital records during the visit.”

The hospital has since addressed the problem by expanding digital record access to the entire team. With this improvement, critical information is now readily available for the upcoming reinspection.
Food hygiene ratings range from five (very good) to zero (urgent improvement required), with one indicating that major improvements are necessary.
