Saint Martin’s Hospital in Odd Down, Bath, received a one-star hygiene rating primarily because a staff member was unable to access essential digital food safety records during an inspection in February. Despite this, the hospital’s overall cleanliness and food handling were reported as generally satisfactory.
The low rating was specifically related to the management of food safety— a category that evaluates systems ensuring food is safe to eat, staff knowledge of food safety protocols, and confidence in sustaining these standards. The issue arose because the team on duty could not access key digital documentation, which led inspectors to conclude that major improvements were necessary.
A spokesperson for HCRG Care Group, which manages Saint Martin’s Hospital, emphasized their commitment to food hygiene: “The inspection found food handling and cleanliness to be generally satisfactory, but issues in food safety documentation emerged because the team could not access important digital records at the time. We promptly addressed this by broadening access across the team, ensuring that information is readily available for the upcoming reinspection.”

Food hygiene ratings range from zero (urgent improvement required) to five (very good). Saint Martin’s current rating of one indicates that significant improvements are necessary, but with procedural changes already underway, the hospital is preparing for a forthcoming reinspection.
