Bath Hospital Launches Campaign to Transform Cancer and Dementia Diagnosis

The Royal United Hospitals Bath is embarking on a crucial £4 million fundraising campaign led by its official charity, RUHX, to acquire a next-generation PET-CT scanner. This investment promises to revolutionize the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities, improving detection and treatment pathways for cancer, dementia, and other serious illnesses.

The campaign’s goal is to install a state-of-the-art PET-CT scanner along with new uptake rooms, which will more than double the annual scanning capacity—from 1,700 to up to 5,000 patients. This expansion is expected to enable earlier, more precise diagnoses across a broad spectrum of diseases.

Sarah Cade, head of nuclear medicine at the RUH, explained the impact: “This new PET-CT scanner combines advanced Positron Emission Tomography and Computed Tomography technology, allowing us to detect diseases with unprecedented accuracy and at much earlier stages. It means faster scans, lower radiation doses, and shorter wait times for our patients.”

Cancer survivor David Barton from Bath shared his experience with PET-CT scans before and after treatment, describing the technology’s role as offering him “peace of mind.” He said, “The initial scan confirmed the cancer hadn’t spread, and the follow-up confirmed it was gone. That relief is immeasurable.”

PET-CT imaging not only produces detailed visual insights but also provides vital information that aids diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient recovery—bringing clarity and hope to those affected.

Rhyannon Boyd, associate director at RUHX, highlighted the urgency of the upgrade: “Our current PET-CT scanner has been in use since 2016 and is nearing the end of its service life. Modern scanners are three times more sensitive, delivering clearer images and much faster results, which is critical for effective patient care. This campaign represents a major step forward in our ability to serve our community.”

Now celebrating its 26th year, RUHX has played a significant role in advancing healthcare at RUH Bath, funding projects like the Dyson Cancer Centre, robotic surgery programs, and the expansion of breast care services.
