Colonna and Small’s, a well-loved coffee shop in Bath, has finally upgraded its hygiene rating from one star to the highest five-star rating after a reinspection this week. The café, which had been struggling to secure a revisit from Bath and North East Somerset Council for over a year, is now recognized for its improved standards.
The initial one-star rating, issued in February 2025, was primarily due to concerns about the use of a downstairs prep and storage room. The coffee shop’s spokesperson described the low score as “severe” and emphasized that they promptly addressed the council’s feedback. Despite multiple applications for a reassessment, the café faced a frustrating wait for another inspection.
On March 31, an unannounced inspection noted significant improvements. The inspector commended Colonna and Small’s efforts, stating, “Good improvements made since previous inspection. Now a five-star rated business – well done.”

The team at Colonna and Small’s expressed frustration over the delay and criticized aspects of the original inspection process. They also mentioned that the council issued an apology following the initial visit. Attempts to obtain further comment from the council have been made.
Customers have voiced their support for the café, with one Bath Live Facebook commenter remarking, “Surprising to see Colonna and Small’s one-star rating was given in the first place, considering their attention to detail with the quality of everything else.”
Known for its artisanal specialty coffee, Colonna and Small’s boasts a stellar 4.7 out of 5 rating based on 1,490 Google reviews. The business, established in Bath in 2009, continues to be a favourite destination for coffee lovers.
