The change comes more than a year after the café initially received a low rating, which the business described as harsh and frustrating.
The initial one-star rating, issued in February 2025, was largely attributed to required changes in how a downstairs preparation and storage area was utilized. The coffee house promptly addressed the council’s concerns but faced delays and repeated attempts before a follow-up inspection was scheduled.
On March 31, an unannounced revisit by a council inspector acknowledged significant improvements, stating: “Good improvements made since previous inspection. Now a five-star rated business – well done.” This commendation marks a complete turnaround for Colonna and Small’s in terms of hygiene credentials.

Throughout the waiting period, the Colonna and Small’s team expressed frustration over the lack of timely reinspection despite numerous applications through the council’s food safety portal. They maintained confidence that their operational standards adhered to best practices, anticipating a more favorable rating.
The coffee shop also raised issues regarding the original inspection process. Bath and North East Somerset Council has reportedly issued an apology concerning the initial visit, though official comments remain pending.
Customers have voiced support for the café on social media, with one noting surprise at the original low rating given Colonna and Small’s renowned attention to quality and detail.
