Bath Coffee Shop Closes After Struggling with High Business Rates and VAT

Silcox Coffee, a popular café located in the heart of Bath, will close its doors after this weekend, citing high business rates and VAT as key factors behind the difficult decision.

The announcement was made on the shop’s Instagram account on Saturday, May 30. A spokesperson expressed the bittersweet news: “Unfortunately, sometimes businesses don’t survive, even when you give it your all. Business rates are too high, and VAT in the UK is a heavy burden. Still, we’ve made many memories and friendships along the way, and have had numerous proud moments.”

Silcox Coffee opened its doors on New Street earlier this year in 2024. It quickly gained popularity, earning a solid 4.4-star rating from 114 Google reviews. Customers appreciated the cafe’s welcoming atmosphere, spacious seating, and quality offerings.

Regular patrons shared their sadness over the closure. One loyal customer said, “My family loved coming here regularly, grabbing our favorite window seats with flat whites and those huge chocolate muffins. We’re really sorry to see it go but thankful for the memories.”

Another echoed the sentiment: “This is so, so sad. I always enjoyed coming here because it was pram and dog friendly, spacious, with great food and such friendly staff. I’d recommend everyone to stop by before they close.”

Despite widespread sympathy, some questioned the decision. A Reddit user commented, “While it’s sad to see them close, I don’t think it’s solely because of tax changes. Coffee shops have always faced tough competition, and Silcox didn’t particularly stand out in Bath’s crowded café scene.”

Silcox Coffee invites customers to visit during their final weekend to say goodbye and show support before closing.
