Bath Coffee Shop Closes After Struggling with Business Rates

Silcox Coffee, a cherished coffee shop located in the heart of Bath, has announced it will close its doors after this weekend. The team attributed the closure to the high cost of business rates and VAT, citing these financial burdens as key reasons behind the decision.

In a heartfelt message posted on Instagram on Saturday, May 30, Silcox Coffee expressed their disappointment: “Unfortunately, sometimes businesses don’t survive, even when you try your best. Business rates are too high. VAT in the UK is too high. However, we made some memories and friends along the way, with lots of proud moments!”

The message continued with gratitude towards their supporters: “We just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone who supported us through these last two years. From the bottom of our hearts, we appreciate each and every one of you. Please come in and say goodbye to us, as this is our final weekend trading!”

Since opening on New Street in early 2024, Silcox Coffee has received mostly positive feedback, holding a 4.4 out of 5-star rating from 114 Google reviews. Regular customers expressed sadness at the news. One wrote, “My family loved coming regularly and getting our usual window seats, with our flat whites and that massive choco muffin! Really sorry to hear this and thanks for the memories.” Another added, “This is so so sad. I always came here, as it was pram and dog friendly, super spacious, had delicious food with a lovely atmosphere and such friendly staff.”

Despite the widespread support, some community members questioned whether business rates and VAT were the sole reasons behind the closure. A commenter on Reddit remarked, “While I’m sure it had an impact and it’s sad to see them close, I don’t think it was 100% because of recent tax changes. Coffee shops have always had a high closure rate. They were slightly more expensive than others and didn’t differentiate themselves enough in Bath.”

Silcox Coffee will remain open for customers through the weekend for a final farewell.
