Bath City’s Relegation Fears Deepen Following Another Home Defeat

Bath City faced a tough evening at Twerton Park as Hemel Hempstead secured a decisive 3-0 victory in challenging, rain-soaked conditions. The visitors capitalized on crucial moments in both halves, while the Romans were left frustrated by missed opportunities and an inability to capitalize on chances.

The match began under heavy rain and wind, making it difficult for either side to find rhythm. Hemel Hempstead pressed with a high defensive line early on, but Bath showed early promise. Within five minutes, the Romans orchestrated a good attacking move, with Owen Windsor linking up with Scott Wilson to deliver a threatening cross that was eventually cleared.

City earned multiple free-kicks in advanced positions during the opening phase but struggled to convert these into clear scoring chances. Hemel also posed threats, highlighted by an excellent cross from Isiah Noel-Williams that couldn’t find a teammate to finish.

The game quickly evolved into an end-to-end battle. Windsor remained Bath’s key playmaker, combining well with Wilson and creating space. Wilson’s shot was well-saved by Hemel’s goalkeeper Michael Johnson. Hemel answered with a swift counterattack, testing Bath’s keeper Harvey Wiles-Richards with a low-driven strike.

As the first half wore on, Bath City increased their pressure. Jordan Alves came close with a powerful shot that narrowly missed, and Windsor’s clever flick set up Wilson again, though a critical defensive intervention and a shot off the post denied a goal. Hemel stayed dangerous on counters and set-pieces, with Kieran Parselle making a crucial block to keep the scores level.

Midway through the half, Bath lost Luke Russe to injury, an important blow for the hosts. Despite this, they maintained pressure, with Ollie Tomlinson volleying just wide following a long throw. However, Hemel seized the initiative just before halftime. A partial defensive clearance led to George Williams curling a composed finish into the bottom left corner, giving Hemel a 1-0 lead at the break.

After the break, Bath City aimed for a swift response but faltered early. A defensive lapse allowed Noel-Williams to capitalize on a loose ball inside the box, his shot deflecting off Parselle and slipping past Wiles-Richards for 2-0 in the 49th minute.

Hemel nearly made it three soon after, with Vilhete hitting the post from a corner, while City struggled to regain control. Substitutions, including the introduction of goalkeeper Charlie Binns, couldn’t shift the momentum. Hemel dominated the tempo and kept Bath pinned back.

Remaye Campbell remained a constant threat, drawing a fine save from Binns after cutting inside. Eventually, his persistence paid off as he controlled a long ball, kept it in play, and curled a precise left-footed shot into the far corner to seal a 3-0 victory.

In the closing stages, Bath struggled to mount meaningful attacks, while Hemel remained solid defensively, securing their third consecutive clean sheet and a comprehensive win.

Despite some positive attacking spells, particularly in the first half, Bath City were punished by Hemel Hempstead’s clinical finishing. The defeat extends their stay in the relegation zone with significant work needed to climb the league table.

Interim Manager James Moon acknowledged the strong first-half display, saying, “For 44 minutes I thought we were excellent, very, very competitive.” On losing key player Luke Russe to injury, he commented, “It was a big loss.”

Moon remains hopeful, stating, “Hopefully we can get some players back fit and start to turn things around,” and emphasized the importance of focusing on upcoming opportunities, “It’s important that we don’t dwell on tonight too much because there’s a big opportunity on Saturday.”

Reflecting on his experience, Moon expressed positivity, “For me it was an experience that, other than the result and the challenges, I’ve enjoyed,” praising his players’ support as “Absolutely brilliant, I can’t speak any more highly of them.”
