Bath City manager Scott Bartlett urged his players to “take the handbrake off” following their resilient opening day victory away at Sholing. The Romans came from behind to secure a 2-1 win, with debutant Harry Parsons netting a late, decisive goal despite sustained pressure from their hosts.
Sholing started the match strongly on their 3G surface, utilising slick passing and wide play to good effect. They took an early lead when Michael Folivi capitalised on a low cross from Tommy Willard to slot home. Despite this setback, Bath City gradually found their footing, with Scott Wilson levelling the score after 30 minutes courtesy of a close-range volley.
The remainder of the first half saw chances at both ends, with vital saves from both goalkeepers. The second half continued in similar fashion, with Sholing pressing hard and creating several opportunities, including a shot from Harry Taylor narrowly over the bar and efforts from Folivi and Magri that tested City’s defence.

Despite being under constant siege, Bath City’s defence stood firm, with organised defending repelling numerous crosses and corners. Their perseverance paid off late in the game when Reuben Reid laid the ball off to Parsons, who carefully controlled the bounce before lifting a shot over the advancing Sholing keeper, Jack Turner, to clinch the victory.
Reflecting on the performance, Bartlett acknowledged the team did not play to their best but praised their effort and commitment. “We knew it was going to be tough, and it ended up being tougher than we even thought. We didn’t play particularly well, but what we lacked in quality, we made up for in effort and endeavour,” he said.
Bartlett emphasised the importance of their defensive organisation and hard work to withstand the pressure and noted that Sholing would likely feel disappointed to leave empty-handed. He encouraged his players to relax and enjoy their football more moving forward. “There’s so much effort, the players care so much, that they probably just need to take the handbrake off, relax and enjoy what they’re doing. That was a big win and a lovely moment with the supporters at the end,” Bartlett added.
Though admitting there is room for improvement going forward, the victory provided a solid platform for the team to build upon in the coming matches.
