Bath City Heartbreak as Farnborough Snatch Late Victory, Deepening Relegation Woes

Bath City endured a painful setback at Twerton Park as Farnborough secured a dramatic 1–0 victory thanks to a late goal in the 89th minute. Despite showing improved form compared to their heavy defeat the previous weekend, Bath’s hopes were dashed following Jordan Tillson’s second yellow card and a swift strike that ensured Farnborough’s eighth win in a tough relegation battle.

The match began with Farnborough testing City’s defence early, with Alfie Tuck’s shot within five minutes signaling their intent. However, it was Bath City who controlled much of the first half, mounting sustained pressure through coordinated plays involving Scott Wilson, Ruebin Sheppard, and Matt Bowman. Their efforts nearly paid off when Bowman’s powerful header seemed destined to score, only to be spectacularly saved by Farnborough’s debutant goalkeeper Joe Duncan, who tipped the ball onto the crossbar.

Owen Windsor came close with an attempt over the bar in the 16th minute, followed by a threatening long throw that caused confusion in Farnborough’s defence. As the first half progressed, Bath City continued creating chances, including a promising three-on-two attack involving Putman, Bowman, and Sheppard, though Sheppard’s shot narrowly missed.

A contentious moment occurred just before halftime when Alfie Tuck appeared to receive a second booking for a late challenge, but after clarification, he was only given a yellow card. The first half ended goalless despite Bath’s persistent pressure and Farnborough’s counter threats.

Bath City began the second half strongly, with Wilson breaking forward in promising situations. The Romans came closest to taking the lead when Tillson’s powerful shot from the edge of the box struck the woodwork after Farnborough failed to clear. Farnborough’s Wesley Fonguck posed continuous problems with incisive runs, forcing the Bath defenders to stay alert.

Midway through the second half, Farnborough created a scramble in front of goal following a free-kick, but Bath’s defence held firm. Soon after, City faced a blow as Joe Raynes appeared injured, hobbling off the pitch after treatment, temporarily reducing their momentum.

The Romans rallied and launched several dangerous attacks, with Luke Russe firing a first-time shot forcing another impressive save from Duncan. Batten’s header in the box was also kept out, keeping the scoreline level as the clock ticked down.

The critical turning point came in the 87th minute when Jordan Tillson was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a late challenge. Reduced to ten men, Bath conceded from the resulting free-kick. Michael Klass’ header across goal met Micah Anthony, who calmly finished into the bottom-right corner, securing Farnborough’s victory.

Despite pushing forward in the final minutes and earning a last-minute long throw, Bath were unable to breach Farnborough’s defence again. The 1–0 defeat leaves Bath City five points adrift of safety, deep in the relegation zone as the season nears its conclusion.

Manager Darren Way expressed his disappointment but praised the team’s spirit, noting, “It was extremely disappointing, certainly with the amount of chances we created,” and reaffirmed, “There wasn’t a lack of effort.” On handling relegation pressure, he emphasized the importance of composure amid emotional surroundings, stating, “You have to stay clear thinking when there’s a lot of people around you who are very, very emotional.”

Looking ahead, Bath City host another crucial home match this Saturday. Way remains focused and determined: “I’ll make sure myself and the coaching staff are preparing the team in the right way and we’ll stay positive; there’s a job to be done.”
