Bath City grind out narrow win against Hanworth Villa despite sluggish performance

Bath City secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Hanworth Villa, thanks to Ollie Chamberlain’s first goal for the club. The midfielder capitalised on a chance from close range to extend Bath’s unbeaten run while halting Hanworth’s momentum.

The Romans faced a setback before kick-off when Harrison Minturn was injured during the warm-up, resulting in Jack Batten’s late inclusion for his first appearance under manager Scott Bartlett. Additionally, James Morton made his third debut for the club, slotting in seamlessly as Bath achieved seven points from their opening three matches - their best start since the 2019/20 season.

In challenging, hot conditions, the early phases were cagey with neither side asserting dominance. A timely hydration break seemed to benefit Bath, who soon tested Hanworth’s goalkeeper, Tyla Dickinson, with Scott Wilson’s shot before the breakthrough. A swift move saw Joe Raynes deliver down the flank to Harry Parsons; his cross evaded Wilson but found Chamberlain, perfectly positioned to score from six yards.

Hanworth threatened late in the first half, notably when Toure Williams fired a powerful 20-yard effort that Bath goalkeeper Harvey Wiles-Richards brilliantly tipped over the top.

Bath started the second half with intent, creating a chance where Wilson was denied at the near post following a flowing move with Enzio Boldewijn and Joe Raynes. However, Hanworth intensified their pressure, with Gio McGregor drawing a miss and Haydon Vaughan striking the post with a fierce shot from distance. Josh Casey’s near miss followed a loose clearance from a corner.

The Romans’ substitutes, Matt Bowman and Seweryn Streczen, combined well on a counter-attack, with Streczen forcing a smart save from Dickinson. Towards the end, Hanworth’s Michael Harding had a shot blocked on the line by Batten, helping Bath to secure their first clean sheet of the season.

The victory lifts Bath City to third place in the division, level on points with Chertsey Town and Uxbridge, ahead of their upcoming away fixture against Basingstoke Town.

Manager Scott Bartlett conceded the team lacked energy. He said, “I’m happier with the points total than the performances so far. We looked a bit lethargic, and I think it was our experience that got us the win, rather than our legs.” He praised the team’s defensive resilience, noting how they “put bodies on the line” and commended Jack Batten for stepping up at short notice.

Bartlett highlighted Chamberlain’s versatility and importance, explaining how the midfielder was deployed further forward than usual and ultimately scored the winning goal. He commented, “Ollie is a seven or eight out of 10 wherever he plays. He’s really selfless, and I’m delighted for him.”

The manager also reflected on the team’s strategy, acknowledging the challenges of pressing high with a congested schedule and emphasising the value of their solitary well-executed attacking move that led to the goal.

James Morton’s return from injury added balance to the side, with Bartlett noting Morton was planned to play just an hour but showed great effort and fitness despite being only partly match fit.

Overall, Bartlett expressed cautious optimism, stating, “We’ve been nowhere near where I want us to be yet, but there’s a nice feel about the place. Wins are hard to come by, especially in these conditions, so we will enjoy it while striving to improve.”
