Bath City Faces Relegation Threat After Heavy Defeat to Torquay United

Bath City’s hopes of avoiding relegation took a severe hit following their 4-1 defeat to Torquay United. Facing his former club as part of Torquay’s coaching staff, Darren Way’s team dominated at Plainmoor, powered by Dylan Morgan’s commanding hat-trick.

Early optimism came when Jordan Alves leveled for Bath, but Torquay’s superior play quickly prevailed. The Romans now find themselves 10 points behind the safety zone with only four matches left, relying on victories coupled with favorable results elsewhere to stay up.

A late injury to Donovan Wilson forced manager Scott Bartlett into a risky inclusion of Will Jenkins Davies, returning after 16 games out. The gamble faltered instantly as Davies lasted less than five minutes before being replaced by Ruebin Sheppard. The setbacks continued when Torquay took the lead midway through the first half, with a deflected shot from Evans looping over goalkeeper Charlie Binns.

Despite a spirited response highlighted by Alves’ stunning 20-yard strike to equalize, Torquay soon regained control. Dylan Morgan gave the visitors a first-half penalty area strike that slipped past Binns, regaining the lead. Torquay’s attacking pressure intensified in the second half, with Morgan capitalizing on space to double his tally minutes after the restart and then completing his hat-trick with a deft finish following a scramble inside the box.

Morgan’s achievement marked the first opposing player to net a hat-trick against Bath City since 2017. Torquay nearly increased their advantage further, hitting the post late in the contest while Bath struggled to respond effectively amid fatigue from a congested fixture schedule.

Critical news arrived with Farnborough’s victory over Horsham; if Bath City lose their upcoming home game against Chesham United, relegation will be confirmed. Adding to the challenge, even a single win from Farnborough’s remaining fixtures could seal Bath’s fate.

Bartlett acknowledged the difficult circumstances: “Even at full strength, today would have been tough. The lads gave their all, especially after the effort on Friday. We were competitive early, but their quality and our fatigue told in the second half.”

He emphasized the need for reinforcements and resilience, noting the challenges caused by losing players to injury. “Our focus now is finishing strong in these last matches, both as individuals and as a team,” Bartlett concluded.

With time running out, Bath City must regroup quickly to fight for survival in the Southern Premier South.
