Bath City Exit FA Trophy Following Close Defeat to Southend United

Bath City showed true grit and determination in their FA Trophy clash against Southend United, despite ultimately succumbing to a narrow defeat. Manager Darren Way expressed immense pride in his team’s performance, especially considering they were down to ten men for over 70 minutes against a side 36 league places above them.

“We were really up against it after the sending off,” Way said. “But the players caused Southend several problems, and the support from our fans was tremendous. Jordan’s stunning strike gave us a real boost and got the crowd on their feet.”

Jordan Alves’s magnificent free-kick was a highlight of the match, injecting momentum into Bath City and nearly forcing a third consecutive penalty shootout in their FA Trophy campaign. However, the visitors managed to edge out a win, leaving City to reflect on a valiant performance.

Way also praised his squad’s contribution, including four substitutes who brought fresh energy late in the game, notably debutant Ruebin Sheppard on loan from Bristol City. Right-back Jaiden Putman had his loan extended for another month as the club looks ahead to upcoming fixtures.

Goalkeeper Harvey Wiles-Richards, who made several crucial saves including a penalty save against Jack Bridge, echoed the manager’s sentiments. “Going down to ten men early was tough, and I don’t agree with the penalty decision that changed the game’s course. But we fought hard until the end.”

Wiles-Richards described Alves’s free-kick as “beautiful,” noting the incredible power and movement that left the opposing goalkeeper with no chance. The City custodian also shared personal news of becoming a father recently, which has added a joyful dynamic to his life off the pitch.

As Bath City prepares to return to league action this Saturday against Dover Athletic, Way remains optimistic. “We’re focused on the next challenge. The players have shown great spirit, and we look forward to continuing to build on these performances.”
